Since I’m currently here in Maui, it felt only right to share a sample weeklong itinerary for anyone dreaming about Hawaii, or for those who may not even realize yet just how magical Maui can be. This is not a rush-from-place-to-place kind of destination. Maui is best enjoyed with a balance of adventure, beach time, local flavor, scenic drives, and quiet moments where you simply stop and take it all in. Day 1: Arrival & Settle Into Island Time After arriving on Maui, I always recommend keeping the first day simple. Pick up your rental car, check into your resort, unpack, and let yourself ease into vacation mode. If you’re staying in the Kāʻanapali area, take a stroll along the beach walk, enjoy dinner with an ocean view, and watch your first Maui sunset. There’s something about that first evening, toes in the sand, warm breeze, and the sound of the waves, that immediately reminds you that you’ve arrived somewhere special.

Day 2: Beach Day in West Maui Start your first full day with one of Maui’s most beautiful beaches. Kapalua Beach is one of my personal favorites. It has that postcard-perfect feel with golden sand, calm water on the right day, and a peaceful setting that makes it easy to understand why people fall in love with this island. Later, spend time exploring the Kāʻanapali area, whether that means snorkeling at Black Rock, enjoying lunch by the water, shopping at Whalers Village, or just relaxing by the pool. West Maui is known for its resorts, restaurants, activities, and incredible sunsets, making it a wonderful home base for many travelers. Day 3: Haleakalā Sunrise & Upcountry Maui One of the most unforgettable experiences on Maui is watching the sunrise from the summit of Haleakalā. It is early, very early, but it is absolutely worth it. Standing above the clouds as the sky slowly changes colors is one of those moments that feels almost otherworldly. A sunrise reservation is required for vehicles entering the Summit District between 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., and reservations are made in advance online; the park entrance fee is separate. After sunrise, take your time exploring Upcountry Maui. Stop for breakfast, visit a farm or local shop, and enjoy a completely different side of the island, cooler air, rolling hills, and beautiful views that stretch toward the ocean.

Day 4: Pāʻia, Hoʻokipa & North Shore Charm The North Shore has such a special energy. Pāʻia is a charming little town with boutique shops, casual restaurants, and a laid-back surf-town feel. It’s a great place to wander, grab lunch, and support local businesses. Nearby Hoʻokipa Beach is another favorite stop, especially if you enjoy watching surfers, windsurfers, spotting sea turtles on the beach or simply taking in the rugged beauty of Maui’s coastline. It’s also a wonderful reminder that Maui is more than just resort beaches, it’s wild, vibrant, and full of personality. Day 5: The Road to Hāna The Road to Hāna is one of Maui’s most famous experiences, but it’s important to approach it with the right mindset. This is not just a drive to “check off” a list, it’s a full-day journey through lush rainforest, waterfalls, coastal views, roadside fruit stands, and small communities. The Hāna Highway runs along Maui’s northern coast, and depending on stops, the drive can take several hours or an entire day. My biggest advice is to start early, be patient, respect private property, pull over only where it is safe and legal, and remember that this road is also used by local residents. Whether you go all the way to Hāna or enjoy a partial route, it’s one of the best ways to experience Maui’s natural beauty.

Day 6: Ocean Adventure or Relaxed Resort Day By this point in the trip, I love building in flexibility. Some families may want a snorkel cruise, whale watching in season, a catamaran sail, or a guided tour. Others may prefer a slower day at the resort, more beach time, spa appointments, or a long lunch with an ocean view. This is also a great day to revisit a favorite spot, enjoy shave ice, or simply relax without an agenda. Some of the best vacation memories happen when you stop overscheduling and let the island lead the way. Day 7: One Last Maui Morning On your final full day, I recommend keeping things meaningful but relaxed. Enjoy breakfast with a view, take one more beach walk, pick up locally made gifts, or visit a favorite town or beach one last time. Maui is still healing in many ways, and one of the best ways visitors can show aloha is by supporting local restaurants, shops, guides, and businesses. Maui Nui First, a County of Maui initiative, encourages residents and visitors to support local businesses first, a small choice that can make a meaningful impact for the island community.

Maui is the kind of place that offers something for almost every traveler: adventure, culture, relaxation, romance, family memories, breathtaking scenery, and a deep sense of connection. But what makes it truly unforgettable is the spirit of the island and its people. Every visit reminds me to travel with gratitude, respect, and an open heart. If Hawaii has been on your dream list, or even if it wasn’t yet, Maui may be the island that surprises you, moves you, and calls you back again and again.
