Five Must-Visit Destinations in Hawaii

The Hawaiian Islands are a treasure trove of unforgettable adventures, and as someone who’s fallen head over heels for this enchanting paradise, it was difficult to choose just five of my favorite experiences. From winding along Maui’s legendary Road to Hāna to summiting Oʻahu’s majestic Mount Kaʻala, each journey immerses you in the raw beauty and culture of the islands. Whether it’s a luxurious retreat at Sensei Lānaʻi, stargazing atop the world’s tallest mountain on Hawaiʻi Island, or basking in the serene splendor of Hanalei Bay on Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi offers moments that will leave you awestruck and forever changed.
1. Drive the Road to Hāna, Maui
The iconic 52-mile journey along Hāna Highway is more than just a drive—it’s a sensory adventure that immerses you in the raw beauty and culture of Maui. Starting in Kahului and winding its way to the quaint town of Hāna, this unforgettable road trip offers breathtaking views, thrilling twists and turns, and countless opportunities to pause and soak in the magic of the island. For me, this drive was a highlight of my Maui experience—a perfect blend of exploration, awe, and serenity.

As you navigate the 620 curves and cross dozens of one-lane bridges, you’ll be treated to a kaleidoscope of sights and sounds. Towering cliffs draped in lush tropical greenery give way to cascading waterfalls, their cool mist a welcome reprieve from the Hawaiian sun. Along the way, farm stands pop up like hidden treasures, tempting you with fresh produce and what might just be the most heavenly banana bread you’ll ever taste. Trust me, stopping for a slice is non-negotiable—it’s that good.

Reaching Hāna feels like stepping back in time to a slower, simpler way of life. A stroll along the striking black-sand beach at Waiʻānapanapa State Park is a must, but be sure to reserve your spot ahead of time. The contrast of the dark volcanic sand against the vivid blue ocean is mesmerizing, and the serenity of this place is something you won’t soon forget. A visit to Hasegawa General Store, a local institution, adds a charming touch to the experience—stock up on unique finds and enjoy the warm aloha spirit. For a dose of adventure, take the hike to Fagan’s Cross, where sweeping views of Hāna’s picturesque landscape await.

The Hāna Highway is more than a road—it’s a journey into the heart of Maui’s natural beauty and island culture. It’s a day filled with wonder, discovery, and memories that will stay with you long after you’ve returned home. If you’re looking for a truly immersive Maui experience, this drive deserves a top spot on your bucket list. For me, it wasn’t just about the destination—it was about the magic of every mile along the way.
2. Trek to the summit of Mount Kaʻala, Oʻahu
Conquering the 4,025-foot summit of Mount Kaʻala, Oʻahu’s tallest peak, is no small achievement—it’s a challenging and unforgettable adventure that rewards the determined with unparalleled beauty and a profound sense of accomplishment. For experienced hikers, the elevation may not seem daunting, but the journey to the summit demands navigating a steep 6.8-mile out-and-back trail filled with slippery sections, rugged terrain, and exhilarating rock scrambles. This is no ordinary hike; it’s an immersive experience through some of Hawaiʻi’s most pristine and untouched natural landscapes.

As you ascend the Waiʻanae Mountains, you’ll be treated to jaw-dropping vistas of Oʻahu’s Leeward Coast, with panoramic views stretching to the ocean and beyond. But the rewards don’t stop there. Along the way, you’ll encounter rare, endemic ecosystems teeming with native plants and wildlife, offering a glimpse into Hawaiʻi’s ecological richness. These ecosystems have remained largely undisturbed, making this hike a journey not only through the island’s topography but also through its unique biodiversity.

Reaching the summit of Mount Kaʻala is like stepping back in time. The ancient Waiʻanae Mountains, shaped over millennia by wind and rain, hold stories as old as the islands themselves. Steeped in Hawaiian legend, these peaks are more than just a physical challenge—they are a link to the cultural and natural history of Oʻahu. For those ready to take on this arduous trek, Mount Kaʻala offers not only a test of endurance but also an opportunity to connect with the spirit and beauty of the island in a way few ever experience.
3. Stay at Sensei Lānaʻi, Lānaʻi
Lānaʻi, the smallest inhabited island in Hawaiʻi, is a hidden gem that offers a sense of tranquility like no other. Spanning just 17 miles long and 13 miles wide, with a close-knit community of a little over 3,000 residents, Lānaʻi is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the larger islands. But beyond its serene landscapes and quiet charm lies a transformative retreat: Sensei Lānaʻi, A Four Seasons Resort, an exclusive adults-only wellness destination unlike anything else in Hawaiʻi.

Nestled in the cool, lush uplands of the island rather than along a bustling beachfront, Sensei Lānaʻi offers an experience that is both deeply personal and refreshingly innovative. Surrounded by majestic Cook pine trees and mountain vistas, this resort is designed to help guests reconnect with their health and well-being through intentional living. 4. Stargaze atop Mauna Kea, Hawaiʻi Island
From trekking through the dramatic landscapes of Haleakalā National Park to the challenging ascent of Mount Kaʻala, climbing to the top of a mountain is a treasured activity across the Hawaiian Islands. But nowhere is this more awe-inspiring than on Hawaiʻi Island, home to Mauna Kea, a peak that claims the title of the tallest mountain on Earth when measured from base to summit. Rising a staggering 33,500 feet from its base on the ocean floor—and 13,796 feet above sea level—Mauna Kea offers an unparalleled perspective of the island and beyond.

Reaching Mauna Kea’s summit is more than just a physical journey; it’s an otherworldly experience. As you ascend, the lush, tropical landscapes gradually give way to a stark volcanic desert. At the top, the world transforms—clouds stretch endlessly below, and the island’s other iconic volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Hualālai, rise majestically on the horizon. The feeling of standing on this ancient shield volcano, shaped by millennia of eruptions and revered in Hawaiian culture, is humbling and deeply moving.

But Mauna Kea’s magic doesn’t end with daylight. As the sun sets, painting the sky in brilliant hues of orange and pink, the summit transforms into one of the world’s premier stargazing destinations. With its high altitude, dry conditions, and lack of light pollution, Mauna Kea provides crystal-clear views of the cosmos. The experience of watching planets, stars, and distant galaxies illuminate the night sky is unforgettable. It’s no wonder that the Mauna Kea Observatories—some of the most advanced telescopes on the planet—are perched here, harnessing the mountain’s ideal conditions for exploring the universe.

Whether you’re drawn by the challenge of reaching the summit or the serenity of gazing at a star-filled sky, Mauna Kea is a place where nature’s grandeur and the mysteries of the universe come together. It’s an experience that connects you not only to the land and sky but also to the timeless wonder of the Hawaiian Islands.
5. See Hanalei Bay, Kauaʻi
Hanalei Bay is an absolute must-visit for anyone traveling to Kauaʻi, especially those who cherish the beauty of a serene beach day. This beach left me absolutely breathless, and believe me when I say photos do not do it justice!

Nestled on the island’s lush North Shore, this crescent-shaped gem is the stuff of postcards, offering a perfect blend of natural splendor and tranquil vibes. And while it’s undoubtedly one of Kauaʻi’s treasures, it somehow retains an uncrowded, laid-back atmosphere—a rarity for a beach this stunning.

Stretching nearly two miles, Hanalei Bay boasts a wide expanse of soft sand, perfect for spreading out your towel and settling in for a day of relaxation. But it’s the view that truly takes your breath away. Picture this: verdant mountains wrapped in mist rise dramatically in the background, their rugged beauty contrasting with the calm, inviting waters of the bay. It’s a scene so picturesque it feels almost dreamlike.

The historic Hanalei Pier, a beloved landmark, adds to the charm. Whether you’re strolling along its weathered planks or feeling the thrill of a jump into the warm, gentle waves below, the pier offers a simple joy that’s hard to resist. The waters around the pier are typically calm, making this a wonderful spot for families. Kids can splash and swim safely while parents bask in the sun or take in the incredible scenery.

For those who crave a bit of adventure, Hanalei Bay is a playground. The gentle waves are perfect for paddleboarding or learning to surf, and the surrounding beauty makes every activity feel special. Or perhaps you’d rather just sit back, toes in the sand, and let the timeless rhythm of the waves lull you into a state of bliss.

Hanalei Bay isn’t just a beach; it’s a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to savor every moment. Whether you’re seeking a family-friendly escape, a romantic spot to unwind, or a chance to immerse yourself in the magic of Kauaʻi’s North Shore, this bay is pure perfection. It’s the kind of place you’ll find yourself thinking about long after your footprints have faded from the sand.
Hawaiʻi is more than just a destination—it’s a place that captures your heart and leaves an indelible mark on your soul. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls along the Road to Hāna, standing above the clouds on Mauna Kea, or savoring the tranquility of Hanalei Bay, every moment is an opportunity to connect with the islands’ natural beauty and rich culture.
